Work of Robert Wood John Foundation Committee Initiative

The committee on Robert Wood John Foundation Committee Initiative, which devised the Future of Nursing, developed a vision that described the transformation of the healthcare system. The Robert Wood John Foundation requested the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to enter into a partnership to investigate for need the nursing profession transformation. The two institutions established an initiative the Future of Nursing. The states in the US have the mandate to implement recommendations described in the IOM report, which aim at improving healthcare and the nursing future. The California Action Coalition is one of the coalitions and acts as a driving force in the transformation of healthcare in the state. The coalition helps advance the goals described in the IOM report in several ways. One of the initiatives, which the California Action Coalition is working on is to advance nursing practice by increasing the education and training of BSN in areas of the state’s jurisdiction. The state-based coalition aimed at attaining 80% accredited BSNs by 2020 (California Action Coalition, n.d). The initiative bore fruits after two years of the coalition’s effort to increase the number of BSNs hence advancing the nursing profession. Positive results yielded by the efforts indicate an 8.3% improvement in nursing education. Besides, 61.5% of nurses in California have achieved BSN qualifications (California Action Coalition, n.d). The BSN qualification means that the healthcare system achieves better patient outcomes since better skills and decision-making abilities of nurses improve the quality of care.

            The second initiative by the California Action Coalition is to reduce the nursing scope of practice restrictions. The coalition has a commitment to ensuring that nurses remain empowered to practice fully according to the scope of their training and education. With the removal of practice barriers as advocated in this initiative, the nurses will put their broad skills into practice (California Action Coalition, n.d). Subsequently, the state will realize improved access to quality healthcare for the whole population.

Barriers to Advancement that Currently Exist in your State

There are physicians’ organizations that oppose the expansion of nurses’ scope of practice and this poses a significant barrier. Nursing advocates are making efforts to work with a larger coalition of stakeholders and healthcare providers to pass legislation that provides advanced practice nurses with full practice authority. The coalition will also converge on the scope of practice restrictions. Another barrier to advancement that also exists in California is the lack of funding for qualified applicants who wish to study the BSN program and advanced levels of nursing (California Action Coalition, n.d).  Nursing training colleges and universities are collaborating with public and private partners to relieve students of the funding challenge by providing them with affordable loans.
